프리만 델라몬트의 ‘The signist's book of modern alphabets’과 코플리 프레드릭의 ‘A set of alphabets of all the various hands of modern use’ 2권의 책에서 대표적인 알파벳 레터링 샘플을 선별하여 수록한 책이다. 고대, 중세 및 18세기에서 20세기에 이르기까지 사용하였던 수많은 영문 알파벳의 형태를 볼 수 있어 다양한 형태의 영자 디자인을 할 때 참고하기에 유용하도록 제작하였다. 또한 글자에 담겨 표현되는 당시의 건축, 조각, 회화 등 다양한 문화의 형태를 짐작할 수 있어 고대 알파벳 문자 디자인에 관심을 갖는 사람들에게 상당한 도움이 된다. 비율에 따라 정확하게 자작된 글자부터, 장식적인 디자인이 중심이 된 화려한 글자, 내용 전달을 위주로 하는 심플한 디자인의 글자까지 다양한 스타일의 알파벳 레터링이 실려 있다.
Freeman Delamotte(1814-1862)
영국 출생의 작가이자 예술가. 주요 서적으로 The Book Of Ornamental Alphabets Ancient & Modern(1858), The book of ornamental alphabets, ancient and modern, from the eighth to the nineteenth century, with numerals(1859), Medieval alphabets and initials for illuminators (1861), and A primer of the art of illumination for the use of beginners (1860) 등이 있다.
Copley, Frederick S(1828-1905)
영국에서 출생한 후 미국으로 이주하여 1849년 미국 시민권자가 되었다. 1864년 최초로 Copley's Improved Geometrical & Universal Chess-men, adapted for every game on the checkerboard의 2권의 책을 출간하였으며, 이후 1865년 Coast of the United States, 1870년 Set of Alphabets of all the various hands in modern use with examples in each style, designed as a text book 등을 출간하였다.
