영어속담을 공부해야 하는 또 다른 중요한 이유는 한국문화와 영미문화가 다르기 때문이다.
같은 말도 다르게 표현할 때가 많기 때문에 멋진 영어속담을 많이 알아둘수록 좋다고 할 수 있다.
예를 들면, 우리나라말 속담에는 “고양이한테 생선 가게 맡긴다” 처럼 조금 얍삽한 대상에 고양이를 잘 쓰는데, 이것을 영어 속담으로 바꾸자면 이렇게 된다.
“He sets the wolf to guard the sheep”
“늑대에게 양을 지키라고 한다” 로 표현 된다.
이처럼 서로의 문화차이가 속담에도 반영되고 있는 것을 한 눈에 알아 볼 수 있다.
